radio doesn’t work … oh wait… it does!

I once had a businessman here on Roatan tell me flat out that “RADIO DOESN’T WORK”…
It’s interesting to me that someone is so sure of themselves that they can make that bold of a statement. And being the kind of person I am on the outside, I didn’t want to offend them… You see radio does work when someone actually knows how to use it… That’s why in a city like San Diego, California where I spent 25 years on the radio, you will find 30+ radio stations… They all have an audience. They all reach people. The question isn’t if they work or not…
It was one of those “I should have said” moments. Here is my imaginary conversation…
ME- “Ok… Let’s wager that it does work… you Mr. Radio-Doesn’t-Work… and I will put up $10,000 in this bet… Beginning Monday, I will begin to advertise on the radio that on Saturday Morning at 9am… the first 9 people to arrive in your lobby… will each receive $1000 dollars…”
HIM- "Well of course it will work if you do that…”
ME- “Then the radio works… If it didn’t, it’s because you or your advisors didn’t know what they were doing…”
It turns out that when he started his business here on Roatan 15+ years ago, the radio stations didn’t have the coverage area, the roads were non-existent being primarily dirt, and many of the “island sleds” didn’t have radio… In those days, you couldn’t get a land-line telephone on Roatan. He was still upset because some agency with a bunch of experts who knew nothing about Roatan steered him in the wrong direction… He spent a lot of money on it and at that time… it probably didn’t work… and he’s still pissed about it.
But Roatan is a lot different today… People drive from one end of the island to the other with far less effort…
And that time in the car… it’s radio time if you like music… and 40 minutes each way is a great way to communicate a one-to-one message…
