stranded - castaway on a desert island

Pirate ship.jpg

Blue Wave Radio is on an actual “pirate” island. Roatan is one of the “Bay Islands” … It’s thirty miles from the coast of Honduras, easy to see the mainland on a clear day… It’s a beautiful sight. Then you realize that you are along way from anything. 30 miles of water is a pretty big expanse.
Years ago, 1942, the BBC Radio created a show called “Desert Island Discs”… The premise is simple.
If you were stranded on a desert island and could only take a 8 discs of music with you and a luxury and a book… what would those be?
(This would have been quite interesting in those days as a disc was a shellac resin and they were very brittle and heavy. The ‘record’ player weighed 60 pounds and required a case to carry it. That changed of course with the advent of better technology and now you can store 10,000 songs on a phone if you have enough memory.)
At 101.1fm, we call our show CARIBBEAN CASTAWAY… It’s similar…
While the BBC is more serious in tone, my show is more like Gilligan’s Island… Maybe I should change it to Madison’s Island… (What do you think?)
Every show is revealing about the nature of my guests… The music that shaped their lives and that they listen to tells a lot about them. And the stories they tell are beautiful…
I never grow tired of hearing the stories or the voices… Hearing Kyle Kuhlmayer speak about the reason he chose a song by Cher… Devan Blake keeping me in stitches with her non-stop sense of humor (along with here friends Molly and Steph)… New York Times best-selling author Caitlin Rother telling me some of her stories about music she listens too when she’s trying to unwind… Dian Lynn telling me about making salad for Bob Marley… Mike Grace talking about his beautiful wife Carol Anne and his love of AC/DC… Ric Militi choosing the Blue Danube Waltz because waltzing was something his mother loved to do… JoAnne and Bill Harris calling me from their boat… Cary Luber dedicating all 8 songs to amazing women singers/songwriters… Steve Parr stacking a line up of guitar superheroes (Steve is a rock and roll photographer and has seen most of these players…) Brad and Kasey Wallace were visiting Roatan examining the psychic energy of the island and we did a Halloween show with them and songs about ghosts… There is William Crisp explaining his choice of Eva Cassidy’s version of “Fields of Gold”… Joni Mejia Gough recorded her show while wearing a mask during COVID and chose songs that she grew up with her on Roatan… (and she was amazing)… Radio Legend “Pete the Beat” in what is the LONGEST Caribbean Castaway show ever recorded…. Dave DeMan with his Canadian-isms and hockey references… Dave Elmore of the SOL Foundation with that silk voice from the mountains and his deep picks… Lisa Linn from San Diego on a Cruise Ship Visit… and riding in a car with singer/songwriter Lisa Sanders recorded on the highways of southern California… Gary Lewis, an amazing singer and radio friend about what he loves to listen to on an sunny afternoon, I even have Santa Claus picking Christmas songs…
CARIBBEAN CASTAWAY … It’s every Saturday from 10-11am, 5-6pm, and 9-10pm… and I archive the shows so you can share them with your friends…

If you’ve been on the show before here is a link to the archive… CASTAWAY ARCHIVE CLICK HERE

I’M ALSO LOOKING FOR GUESTS
Contact me if you’d like to be on the show… It’s a perfect way to create a memory for your family of the person you are musically… and to tell them about how you feel about them… Now… if you had contacted me before in 2020 and I didn’t get back with you… there is a reason… I lost all of my contact information when my phone crashed in May… Let’s get some new guests… and thanks to all of the original crews…
