Guillermo Anderson

“The Native Son… ”

Guillermo Anderson was taken from us too soon.

One of my first advertisers was Dian Lynn. For those of you who don’t know Dian she owns Umbul Umbul.

She has great taste in furniture, decorations, cooking… (and pretty much everything she does.)

One thing about her is that she loves music and she turned me onto Guillermo Anderson.

I remember seeing Guillermo when I first came to Roatan… Helen Murphy had booked him for the Festival of the Angels in 2015… the first festival for the Angels I attended when I provided free advertising support for Clinica Esperanza and the Sol Foundation…

He blended everything… from Honduran Country music, to Salsa, to Garifuna… There truly was no one like him.

I had no idea who he was and didn’t know that much about him.

Recently Dian reached out to me and asked me if I would consider playing Guillermo Anderson. I spent the last week online listening to his music… There is so much to choose from that picking any 10 different songs was tough… He’s stunning.

I had to read more about him… (You can too with this link to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillermo_Anderson) … One thing I found is that he was educated here in Honduras and then went to college at UC Santa Cruz in California. That’s a great school for Arts. (Their mascot is “Sammy the Banana Slug” … that will also tell you a little about the University.) He studied everything related to theater and music…

He then came back to Honduras and started playing eventually becoming renowned around the world.

I wish that I had more chances to see him… Sadly, after his appearance here in Roatan, he was having throat problems… November of 2015, he was diagnosed with anaplastic thyroid cancer. He passed away in May of 2016.

His life was cut short but his music lives on and so thanks to Dian and all the people who love Guillermo, I’ve added his music to the radio station and I hope you’ll enjoy it.

If you don’t know who he is please check him out. And thanks for listening to Blue Wave Radio…

The following song is El Encarguito… (about the things that make Honduras one of a kind…) It’s fun, cute… and if you live here and love Honduras like I do, you’ll relate…
